2016 Bike & Brews Cruise – success!

Raffling goodies, Frank’s North Star Tavern, and Free State Brewery porch group picture

On Thursday, June 16th, about 60 volunteers and friends of Lawrence Unchained rode from Cottin’s Farmers Market to Frank’s North Star Tavern, from there to the Free State Brewery pub downtown, and finally to the Free State East Side bottling plant and brewery, where we toured the facility and enjoyed excellent food from KB’s Smokehouse. Along the way, we enjoyed the beautiful weather, excellent company, good beer and food, and the thrill of a few raffle drawings.

We raised over $1150!

Thank you to everyone who came out and enjoyed the evening with us! We look forward to riding again next year.

And thanks, also, to Free State Brewery for hosting our event, and all the businesses and individuals who support our efforts to recycle bicycles in Lawrence, Kansas, particularly the Lawrence Re-Cyclery and Anderson Rentals.

May 2016 Lawrence Community Shelter Event

Saturday, May 12th marked another successful event for Unchained at the Lawrence Community Shelter. Five volunteers loaded a trailer and a bike rack full of bikes out to the Shelter for a bike safety and training event. The Shelter’s clients listened to us explain the basics of bicycle safety and maintenance and received refurbished bicycles, helmets, locks and bike lights for their time.

Talking bike safety and maintenance at the Lawrence Community Shelter

Following the seminar and bike fitting, the group took a ride from the Shelter out to the new interchange at K-10 and O’Connell road to practice riding skills and see a convenient and secure route for getting from the Shelter to east Lawrence by bicycle.

In all, Shelter clients earned 12 bicycles by attending the training. In preparation for the event, we received $75 in cash donations, and many new items donated directly from our fundraising efforts, including new locks, lights and helmets.

We appreciate the donations we received in support of this event, and look forward to future projects with the Shelter. We are still accepting donations.

We’ve moved!

Thanks to everyone who came out to our bike Bike Sale at the end of January. We sold a ton of bikes, donated a bunch more to the Lyons Club, and with a light load of bikes and heavy hearts, we left Eudora for Lawrence.

We are currently in warehouse space in Warehouse Arts district in East Lawrence, near 9th and Delaware Streets. We don’t have open shop hours due to the nature of the space we’re in and current zoning, but we are happy to invite you in to see us with an appointment. Keep track of us on Facebook and here for updates.

January 2016 Updates

In December, 2014, we received a Healthy Kids Work Group grant from LiveWell Lawrence to provide bikes, training and all the fixin’s (helmets, locks and lights, etc.) for 30 children in 2015. On June 20th, we had our first training session and bike give-away, and we will have our second session in July. You can read about one of our recipients on Wellcommons.com.

The Bikes and Brews event with Free State Brewery was a huge success, and we look forward to holding the even again next year! Thank you to everyone who rode with us!

We had a very successful event in September, 2014, working with the Lawrence Community Shelter to provide bikes and maintenance training to their guests.
